WHAT IS WORLD AIDS DAY?

World AIDS Day is held on the 1st December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, held for the first time in 1988.

WHY IS WORLD AIDS DAY IMPORTANT?

Over 100,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. More than 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV infection, and almost 1 in 8 (12.8%) are unaware of their infection. Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there
are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, each year in the UK around 6,000 people are diagnosed with HIV, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

THINK POSITIVE: RETHINK HIV

This World AIDS Day, NAT (National AIDS Trust) is challenging people to rethink outdated stereotypes, challenge myths and be positive about HIV, with our ‘Think Positive: Rethink HIV’ campaign. We will be rallying a movement of people to tell the truth about HIV. From awareness-raising bake sales to sharing stats and info online; there are many ways you can get involved.

Yusaf Mack’s name has been in the news these past couple of weeks for all the wrong reasons. First the Philly boxer was claiming he was “too manly” to have done a homosexual porno on his recognizance, and told the media he was drugged to the point he was forced into the acts caught on tape. The 35-year-old athlete immediately switched his stance when the gay adult film company DawgPoundUSA threatened to sue Mack for tarnishing their name with thoughts of drug-induced action scenes and he admitted he was indeed bisexual after apologizing to the studio. Now in a new interview with Philadelphia FOX 29, Mack is digger deeper inside his truth and fully coming out of the closet, in order to free his mind.
“I’m gay. I’m tired of holding it in, it is what it is. I live my life. I’m gay,” the father of 10 told FOX 29’s Quincy Harris. “I was hurt. Like to myself. Then I think about my children, like how am I gonna explain this to my children,” Mack said, “I called a couple of my friends and told them ‘I’m thinking about killing myself.” The suicidal thoughts have since faded and Mack says he is now “happy.”

In Memoriam – Sean Jones  1972- 2015
It is with deep sadness and with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our friend, bodybuilder Sean Jones (Onyx on JML). Sean entered immortality this September 14th and will be missed by his friends, fans and family. Like Icarus, Sean aimed for the heavens, and flew too close to the sun – and the world has lost not only a fierce competitor, but a fine, generous and gentle human being. Sean began his athletic career as a medalist in track and field, with gold and silver medals in triple jump, long jump, javelin, and discus. He studied the martial arts extensively, and then determined to become one of the largest, most commercial bodybuilders in the industry, competing and modeling for some of the most prestigious bodybuilding magazines. Sean was also a great lover of body art and body painting, offering his body as a canvas to champion body painters around the world.
For those of us who knew Sean, his physical prowess – while impressive, paled in compassion to Sean as a human being. Though intimidating in appearance, Sean was simply one of the most kind, compassionate, articulate, and generous human beings most of us had ever had the privilege of knowing. Sean lived his life trying to inspire other people to be their best, to achieve their dreams, and to live their best lives. He was never too busy to coach, to nurture, or to provide a massive shoulder for others to cry on. For those who are interested, we encourage you to follow the Sean Jones Memorial Page on Facebook. Several years ago, Sean lost his beloved mother to breast cancer, and was a great supporter of LiveStrong, an organization to help those living and dying of cancer. If you are so inclined, we would very much encourage you to make a donation in Sean’s name.
